Loft insulation
Uninsulated homes lose a quarter of their heat through the roof, so insulating a loft, attic or flat root is a quick, low-cost way to prevent heat loss and reduce energy bills, making homes warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
After assessment, our trained and certified team can:
- Install (or add to existing layers) to reach the recommended thickness of around 300m insulation on roofs, pipework and tanks
- Add ventilation where needed to avoid condensation
- Draught-proof or replace loft hatches
- Install storage platforms to avoid compressing the insulation
Nancy’s Story: From cold house to cosy home
The Warmer Homes programme helps households who are struggling with heating costs by providing them with fully funded measures that improve energy efficiency and reduce bills. See how our support through this scheme transformed Nancy’s chilly house into a warm, welcoming home.
Room-in-roof insulation
Without ceiling and wall insulation, a loft space used as a room can be very chilly in the colder months and stuffy in summer. Installing room-in-roof insulation is an affordable way to make attics and lofts comfortable all year round and reduce heating bills.
To install room-in-roof insulation, our trained and certified teams:
- Fit a thick (approx. 60mm) insulated plasterboard to walls, ceiling and eaves spaces
- Plaster over it to leave a new wall surface ready for decoration and refixing of features such as electrical sockets and radiators
Flat roof insulation
Installing flat roof insulation can cut a property’s heating bills by a similar amount to loft insulation. Insulating a flat roof from the inside can lead to condensation problems, so the best approach is usually external.
To install flat roof insulation, our trained and certified teams:
- Do a technical survey using our retrofit assessors to check property suitability
- Add a layer of rigid insulation board
- Add a weatherproof layer to finish
Flat roof insulation can be quick and easy to install, taking around 1–2 days.
Case Study: Creating warmer homes across South England
We partnered with Warmer Homes, a consortium of 31 local authorities across the South and East of England led by Portsmouth City Council, to deliver large-scale home retrofit projects under the Home Upgrade Grant (HUG) scheme Phase 2.
The scheme provided eligible off-gas grid households with fully funded energy efficiency upgrades, including all forms of roof insulation, enabling residents to live in warmer, cheaper-to-heat homes.
Support with Warm Homes funding
Agility helps social housing providers, local councils and housing associations to access grant funding including the Warm Homes: Local Grant, Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund and Great British Insulation scheme (GBIS) to support the installation of home energy efficiency improvements – including solar PV, solar batteries, wall insulation, roof insulation and air source heat pumps (ASHP).
Many grants are open to a wide range of households, with some being means-tested (on income or benefits received) while others can be accessed regardless of financial circumstances. Eligibility may depend on factors such as property type, energy performance and postcode.
